Meet: Alyssa Lau
Alyssa caught my eye on instagram and I immediately loved her style. It was a breath of fresh air to see someone with personaility and individuality.
What was the pivotal moment that made you decide to purchase fashion more mindfully?
I first read about the slow fashion movement years ago in the book “Naked Fashion: The New Sustainable Revolution” and was really inspired to start thinking more critically about my consumer habits and choices. Through some light reading and research about how fast fashion affects the world and so many people in it, I realized that there are so many hidden costs apart from a clothing’s price tag that the environment and garment workers have to pay for.
Why are you an advocate for sustainable fashion?
Sustainable fashion has the potential to do so much for a world that is clearly dying. Not only does it promote local businesses and growth, but the sustainable fashion industry is prospected to reduce the fashion industry’s carbon emissions by 20% by 2020. In reality, sustainable fashion isn’t a choice, but a must if we hope to maintain our social and environmental well-being on this earth.
Do you apply the same philosophy in other areas of you life, e.g. food, beauty, travel, etc?
I really believe that life is meant to be enjoyed slowly and mindfully, and this applies to everything, whether it be food travel, beauty, and anything else, really. It’s easy to get caught up in the cost of everything (I mean, who doesn’t like cheap prices?), but once you develop the mindset of constantly questioning the impacts of your consumer choices, cost becomes just one factor, amongst many, when deciding to purchase something!
What do you do in your free time for fun or to relax?
I play board games with my friends, read manga or books, play video games and binge-watch Netflix. When I have a lot on my mind, hot yoga is my go-to.
What is your current obsession? (food/thing/place/something you like to do/music)
Blizzard’s newest first person shooter game, Overwatch.
Your blog and instagram clearly reflect your personality, what advice would you give to someone about being true to oneself?
Create for yourself and only yourself. Don’t get stuck trying to be someone you’re not because of something silly like social media numbers.
